Shadows in the Night

New Cancun area

The following morning the London departed New Hope Town with Colonel Fox, Lieutenant Quinn and her shuttle, and the technical and observer teams with their security elements and the mission’s control group. They flew northeast and made a brief stop in Castillo where Fox went over the proposed plan with Kenji Takahashi then flew on to Winter Haven. By the time they arrived it was nighttime and after a one-hour break to unload some cargo for the settlement London was ready to depart again, this time with Mumbai’s flight crew flying the ship while Parks and his people got some rest after the long flight from New Hope Town. Also onboard now were the two other shuttles needed for the mission. These aircraft were flown by Lieutenants Ole Lamberg and Jonas Fischer and their engineers Master Sergeant Ekaterina ‘Kat’ Federenko and Master Sergeant Lucas Anderson.

Erin Quinn was the lead pilot and she carried technical teams one and two plus the control element and a squad from Eagle Company for security. The control element was composed of Danish communications officer Captain Alis Larsen who was most recently in charge of the ground station in New Hope Town and was the senior officer for the mission. Also in the control group were Lieutenants Ksenia Zajac and Jelena Simons from Eagle Company plus Eagle’s senior NCO First Sergeant Michal Lisowski, two medics, Staff Sergeant Sig Mauer and Sergeant Danny Cane, plus Staff Sergeant Claus Mueller who would fly one of the recon drones while Quinn flew the other. The control element would stay with Quinn after the cameras had been installed and the observation teams taken to the points chosen for them.

Each shuttle carried two technical teams. The technical teams were composed of two communications techs under an officer who would install the surveillance cameras plus a four-person Colonial Security element, also led by an officer. Lamberg and Fischer both carried two six-man squads from Eagle Company who would stay aboard the shuttles while the cameras were being installed but would provide additional security for the observation teams afterwards. Four of the technical teams would become the observer teams once the cameras were in place. The other two would stay with the control group.

The shuttles flew out of the London’s cargo bay soon after midnight while they were still about 50 miles northeast of the settlement. Quinn led them due west until they were about five miles inland before they turned south to avoid being spotted by any alien air detection equipment as they approached the town. They stayed low the whole way and used the cover of a line of low hills that ran to the southwest as they passed the marina where about fifty alien ships were moored. Along the way they took a look at the hills chosen for the observation teams so that Zajac and Simons could see where their squads would be setting up.

They passed west of New Cancun and continued until they turned east towards their first stop, the Ranger Base.
